Buttermilk scones are definitely not lacking in flavor - great by themselves
or with raisins, chocolate chips or cranberries.

Scones Recipe with Buttermilk

  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/4 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 5 1/2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup buttermilk
Optional: add 1/2 cup of cranberries, raisins or chocolate chips

    Wash
    1 tablespoon buttermilk
    1 tablespoon sugar crystals

Preheat oven to 450º F (230º C). Combine dry ingredients and mix well. Cut in butter, mixing until crumbly. Add buttermilk, a little at a time until a soft dough forms - amounts will vary. Knead gently on a lightly floured surface about 15 seconds. Divide dough in half and roll out dough to one-half inch thick.
Cut rounds or shapes with a cutter. Wash/brush the tops lightly with buttermilk and sprinkle with sugar crystals.
Place on lightly greased baking sheets. Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until light golden brown. Makes 10 to 12 scones.
